How to Complete the LTC Online Course and Proficiency Test in Texas

To obtain your License to Carry (LTC) in Texas, you must complete an online handgun safety course and pass a proficiency test. Here’s how:

  1. Choose an Approved Online Course: Select a state-approved online LTC course that covers essential topics such as gun safety, Texas laws, and conflict resolution. The course typically takes 4 to 6 hours to complete.
  2. Complete the Online Training: Study the course material, which includes video lessons, quizzes, and interactive modules. The course is designed to ensure you understand firearm safety and legal responsibilities.
  3. Schedule the Proficiency Test: After finishing the online course, schedule a time to take the in-person shooting proficiency test. This test is required to demonstrate your ability to safely handle and operate a handgun.
  4. Pass the Proficiency Test: At the test, you’ll need to shoot a certain number of rounds (typically 50) at various distances. Successful completion shows you can safely carry and use a firearm.
  5. Submit Your Application: Once you’ve passed the course and test, you can apply for your LTC through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
